SHORT RESEARCH SUMMARY

Professor Pileni has brought significant breakthroughs to science through a high interdisciplinary approach to develop nanotechnology solutions for worldwide research and more specially for energy to accompany the future needs of our societies. Over these last two decades, her major breakthroughs are related to 3D superlattices of nanocrystals called supracrystals. This concerns their high stability compared to isolated nanocrystals, their physical collective properties, their conceptual analogies between supracrystals and atomic crystalline structures and finally their intrinsic properties due to the nanocrystal ordering. Her recent developments in creating water-soluble new hybrid structures of nanocrystals self-assembled in crystalline 3D superlattices for studying their specific chemical, physical and thermal energy release properties open a research area: These structures exhibit supracrystal properties, those of isolated nanocrystals and also those due to the assemblies as a whole.  These hybrids structures have been transfer in cancer cells inducing an increase in their death when they are subjected to light. Hence, they have high potential applications in biomedicine. This  could be extended to other energy conversion processes  such as water splitting or chemical reactions.
